PLEASE DO THIS SURVEY!
Dear Farmers and Growers,
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we have heard from many small farmers that they are having difficulty ordering seeds. Seed companies are apparently passing over small orders to accommodate commercial growers. To address this, the New Mexico Acequia Association and the New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association are trying to assess if we can quickly put together a large order – a seed buying cooperative – to help those of you with IMMEDIATE planting needs. The short list of seed options is not meant to be an encouragement to grow any particular crop, rather it is intended to help create access to seeds that are commonly grown by our members.
At this time, we are looking for funding to cover the cost of the seeds (or at least partial cost), but there are no guarantees at this time. Take this seed order survey by midnight on Wednesday, 4/29. For those who say they need seed immediately, we will be back in touch as soon as we have more information, including what seed company we will order from, associated costs, and timing. We will need your help distributing the seeds within your community, and there is a question related to this.
If you don’t need seed now, but might be interested in being part of an order for fall or winter, we have space for you to tell us that, too. We are not sure what we can pull off, but based on the need we are hearing, we think it is worth a try. Time is of the essence, so let’s see what we can do together!
(NOTE TO NMAA supporters/members: This seed survey and purchase with the NM Farmers’ Marketing Association is in addition to our Semillas pa la Gente project (mentioned below) through which we are giving out smaller quantities of seeds for smaller home/family gardens.)
